A slow PC or laptop could be caused by a failing hard disk/drive:

All hard disks/drive will fail eventually. However, not all hard disks fail instantly. There are sometimes signs of hard disk problems before total failure. Some signs include: Slow start up, intermittent freeze up, sudden computer shut down, blue screen errors and noisy hard disk.

Q: How can I tell if my computer or laptop drive is failing?

A. You can use a tool in Windows called check disk or chkdsk. Using Windows Explorer, right click on your hard disk (usually C:). Choose properties, tools, error checking. Select both boxes to fix system errors and bad sectors. Windows can't run this tool while windows is running so the repair will be scheduled at next restart. If errors are found, some can be repaired and some can't be repaired. Regardless, bad sectors are a sign that complete hard disk failure is likely to happen sometime in the future.

Scammers may call you directly on your phone and pretend to be representatives of a software company. They might even spoof the caller ID so that it displays a legitimate support phone number from a trusted company. They can then ask you to install applications that give them remote access to your device. Using remote access, these experienced scammers can misrepresent normal system output as signs of problems.
Scammers might also initiate contact by displaying fake error messages on websites you visit, displaying support numbers and enticing you to call. They can also put your browser on full screen and display pop-up messages that won't go away, essentially locking your browser. These fake error messages aim to trick you into calling an indicated technical support hotline.
